Words Unspoken is a mixed media project that navigates bereavement. My mother, the person whom I credit for my artistic spirit, unexpectedly passed in February of 2019. To process this sudden loss, I took to task writing and folding 1000 letters into origami hearts. This has given me the opportunity to express all I wished I could've said and honor my mother's life in a creative way. Having personally experienced society's disconnect with the inevitability of loss and the realities of grief, I chose to display this work in an effort to normalize grieving.
During the exhibition, I invited the community to take a moment to write and fold a letter to a loved one and add it to the installation. A total of 65 hearts were contributed.
